Rules :

- DO NOT post answers, links, screenshots or level's elements. You'll get banned if you spoil the pleasure of others, even if they ask for.

If you request some help :

Don't be too specific but don't be too vague. It's rather hard to find the right way to ask but imagine yourself in a room with other players. You can't whisper and you need to solve a riddle, you have the right to ask for a clue those who have already solved it, but you don't want the other players to find before you. To understand what you're asking for, one should be at the same step. Don't spoil the steps for the others ! You can use metaphors if you want. Show us that you're smart!

Read this topic carefully, your question may have already been asked (and answered). There's no need to ask the same question twice, even if there's no answer.

If you help somebody :

Don't help him too much, don't deprive him the pleasure to find by himself, just guide him on the way without being too specific, using as much images, metaphors and maybe other riddles as you can. After all, you're smart too ;)!

If everybody plays by the rules, things will be much more funny and no one will get hurt.

Write in a correct language, ban SMS style and try to avoid spelling mistakes as much as possible.

hey, me and some friends started working on these puzzles and theyre great but were stuck on this one, none of us know how to use a hex editor, we downloaded the free one listed on the site and another one and tried them both out but were having trouble with this puzzle still.

We have both the **.*** file and the ***.*** file.  We've taken all of the ***.*** file and replaced what we feel is the obviously wrong portion of **.*** with it but the file is still unreadable as a .***

I hope thats understandable, we can see whats supposed to happen and thats why we feel its supposed to be a .*** once we're finished but it wont open in anything other than notepad/hex editor because of some 'parsing' error.   Is there a third file were missing since ***.*** doesn't fill up all the wrong part of **.*** because we tried just deleting the rest of the wrong part and got the parsing error.  Or perhaps we have the wrong wrong part, any hints would be appreciated.

or a tutorial on hex editors.

Edit: ahh i got it, i was using the hex editor wrong, i hope there arent a lot that require this program heh

Double Edit: for those that need help using a hex editor, dont simply Delete text, Replace it with nothing.

i am having a similar problem to bobsmith, but i can see two possible places in **.***, and either way, i can't open the file as a readable .*** at the end of it. any advice, or a hex editor tutorial? (it's kind of exciting to be using software i'd never have needed otherwise, though!)

edit: sorry, i started again with clean copies and all went well.

I got this in 5 mins. Got stuck on level 22 for a couple days. Gah!

:)

I looked at the end product first (before any changes from the hex editor) and knew what to do.

hey. i can't download ***.***; it's supposedly corrupted. is this part of the game or is there a problem with my computer? and if the second can someone send me the file?

kfetman

There is no problem with your computer. So good luck and pay attention at the clue and at the riddle.

Just gotta say, I <3 IrfanView.  ALL of my problems were stemming from Windows and it's silly preview feature with the picture viewer.

I am a bit confused about how to use the Hex editor.  If I wish to copy/paste selections from one file into sections of text from another file, how would I make sure the resulting file is functional?

phreakymonkey

Try it and see. You won't hurt anything, just duplicate the file and mess with it. If you corrupt your original, just download it again.

JHolla

This was pretty easy once I realized that my default picture viewing software wouldn't even open the original emily file.  I had been trying the correct procedure all along, but my Kodak software doesn't really like Ouverture Facile's images for some reason.  Save yourself a lot of trouble and just use MSpaint to open any resulting images.

It's a shame he didn't fill the space with 0x23 instead of what's in there now -- yes, that's a bit anal, but I thought it might be appreciated :).

Just wondering, why are there tutorials for MS Paint and sound recorder, but no tutorials for hex editors? Is that intentional? Anyway I'm completely and utterly lost, I downloaded a hex editor, but don't know what to do. Wikipedia isn't too descriptive or helpful on the subject of hex editors. Any suggestions?

Also, can anyone tell me what type of file mil is? or is that giving away too much? Because I can't think of any way to figure it out.

Hex Editor Tutorials. You're really going to need to improve your Google Fu if you want to get far in this game, and I mean that sincerely.

Also, look at the hints in my Mac User's Guide. You may find them helpful.
